Photo to STL Converter for 3D Printing

Photo to STL turns a single picture from your phone or camera into a 3D model you can print. Photograph one subject in even light against a plain background, sign in, and PrintMesh's AI generates a mesh you can download as STL, GLB, or OBJ.

Phone photos in JPG, PNG, or WebP work. iPhone HEIC photos need converting to JPG first.

Your photo is uploaded only after you sign in and press Generate.

How to convert Photo to STL

  1. 01

    Take one good photo

Shoot the subject from the front or a three-quarter angle, filling the frame, with soft even light and nothing else in the shot.

  2. 02

    Sign in and generate

Pick the photo here and press Generate. You sign in, choose a tier, and the picture is uploaded only then.

  3. 03

    Print it

Download the STL, scale it in your slicer, and print. The same generation also gives you GLB and OBJ.

How to photograph something you want to print

Use a three-quarter angle

A straight-on shot hides depth. Turning the subject slightly shows the side and front at once, which gives the AI more to work with.

Light it evenly

Daylight from a window or an overcast sky works well. Hard flash and deep shadows can be mistaken for holes or ridges.

Plain background, one subject

Put the object on a plain table against a plain wall. For pets, a single animal on a plain floor works better than a busy sofa.

Avoid glass, chrome, and fur halos

Transparent and mirror-like surfaces confuse depth. Very fluffy fur gets simplified; expect a smoother, sculpted look rather than individual hairs.

Sample results

Before · uploaded image

Desk figurine photo uploaded as PrintMesh sample input

After · GLB mesh preview (drag to rotate)

A phone photo of a desk figurine: one subject, plain backdrop, even light. If your phone saves photos in another format, share or export as JPG before uploading. Hidden sides are inferred, so the back may differ from the real object. The preview is not a print guarantee — check it in your slicer.

If the result looks wrong

The model looks flat

A dead-on front photo gives little depth information. Retake it from a three-quarter angle, or step back slightly so the whole subject is in focus.

A face or pet doesn't look like them

One photo can only capture so much. Fine likeness is hard; expect a figurine-style interpretation. Higher tiers keep more detail.

Parts of the subject are missing

Anything cut off by the frame edge or hidden behind something can't be modelled. Keep the entire subject in the picture with some space around it.

Check the STL in your slicer before printing

  • Set the real size first. A generated mesh has no physical units, so scale it to the height you want before anything else.
  • Check that the model has a flat, stable base; add a brim or cut a flat bottom for figurines and pets.
  • Let the slicer's repair run if it flags errors. Complex shapes can come out with open or non-manifold edges; PrintMesh does not promise a watertight mesh.
  • Watch for thin legs, ears, or tails that may need supports or a little thickening.

Is Photo to STL the right tool?

Works well for

  • Pets, figurines, statues, and keepsakes photographed at home
  • Souvenirs or objects you can't measure or scan
  • Gifts where a stylised, figurine-like result is fine

Not a good fit for

  • Exact portraits or likeness-critical busts
  • Replacement parts that must match real dimensions
  • Whole rooms, landscapes, or scenes with many objects

Photo to STL FAQ

Can I turn a phone photo into an STL?

Yes. Any phone photo saved as JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 10MB works. iPhones often save HEIC, which PrintMesh does not accept yet; switch the camera to Most Compatible or export the picture as JPG first.

How many photos do I need?

Just one. PrintMesh builds the mesh from a single picture, and the AI estimates the sides it can't see. That makes it fast, but the hidden back is a best guess rather than a scan.

Can I make a 3D print of my pet from a picture?

You can, as long as the pet is clearly visible on its own against a plain background. Expect a sculpted, figurine-style model: fur is simplified and exact likeness is not guaranteed.

Is this the same as photogrammetry or 3D scanning?

No. Photogrammetry stitches dozens of photos into a measured model. PrintMesh uses AI on one picture, so it is much quicker but less accurate — good for decorative prints, not for parts that need to fit.

What file do I get from my photo?

One generation gives you STL to slice, GLB to preview or share, and OBJ to edit in Blender. There is no 3MF export, and PrintMesh does not slice the file or guarantee a watertight mesh.

Is photo to STL free?

New accounts get 10 free credits every month, and a Standard generation costs 1 credit. Free downloads are watermarked; paid plans on the pricing page remove the watermark.
