PNG to STL Converter for 3D Printing
PNG to STL turns a flat PNG image into a 3D mesh you can slice and print. Pick a PNG of one subject, ideally with a transparent or plain background, sign in, and PrintMesh's AI generates a model you download as STL, GLB, or OBJ.
PNG works best with a transparent background. JPG and WebP are accepted too.
Your photo is uploaded only after you sign in and press Generate.
How to convert PNG to STL
01
Pick your PNG
Drop a PNG of one subject — a character, mascot, toy, or object. Transparent backgrounds help the AI find the edges.
02
Sign in and generate
Press Generate. You sign in (new accounts get 10 free credits every month), choose a quality tier, and the photo is uploaded only then.
03
Download STL and slice
Preview the mesh in the browser, then download STL for Cura, PrusaSlicer, or Bambu Studio. GLB and OBJ come from the same generation.
Preparing a PNG for a cleaner mesh
Keep the transparency
If you cut the subject out already, upload the PNG with its alpha channel. A transparent background is the clearest signal of where the object ends.
Avoid tiny icons
Favicons and small sprites have too few pixels to describe depth. Use the largest version you have; PrintMesh warns you when an image is small.
Character art beats flat logos
The AI builds a full 3D shape, not an extrusion. Shaded character art or product renders work well; a flat two-colour logo may come out as a soft, rounded blob.
One subject per file
Sticker sheets or several characters side by side get merged into one odd shape. Crop to the single thing you want printed.

If the result looks wrong
Edges look melted
Semi-transparent glow, drop shadows, or soft anti-aliased outlines blur the silhouette. Flatten effects and keep a crisp edge before uploading.
The back of the model is guesswork
A PNG shows one side. The AI invents the hidden back, so expect it to be simpler than the front. Pick an image that shows the side you care about.
Thin parts disappear
Hair strands, antennae, and thin text often come out too thin to print. Thicken them in your slicer or modelling tool, or choose an image with chunkier shapes.
Check the STL in your slicer before printing
- Set the real size first. A generated mesh has no physical units, so scale it to the height you want before anything else.
- Look for thin features below your nozzle width — common with line art — and thicken or remove them.
- Let the slicer's repair run if it flags errors. Complex shapes can come out with open or non-manifold edges; PrintMesh does not promise a watertight mesh.
- Add supports under overhangs the original artwork never had to worry about, like outstretched arms.
Is PNG to STL the right tool?
Works well for
- Character art, mascots, and figurine-style renders
- Product shots or toys cut out on a transparent background
- A single subject with clear shading that hints at depth
Not a good fit for
- Flat logos or text you need as an exact, measured extrusion
- Technical parts that must fit to the millimetre
- Sprite sheets, collages, or screenshots with several subjects
PNG to STL FAQ
Does a transparent PNG background help?
Yes. A transparent background tells the AI exactly where the subject stops, so the silhouette of the mesh is cleaner. A plain single-colour background is the next best thing. Busy backgrounds can be read as part of the object.
Will my PNG logo become a flat extruded STL?
No. PrintMesh generates a full 3D shape from the image rather than extruding outlines, so flat logos tend to come out rounded. If you need a crisp extruded logo at exact thickness, a CAD or vector-to-STL tool is the better choice.
What PNG size should I upload?
Files up to 10MB in PNG, JPG, or WebP are accepted. Larger, sharper images give the AI more detail to work with; PrintMesh shows a warning when the resolution is low, but you can still try.
Is the STL from a PNG ready to print?
It is a starting point. Open it in your slicer, set the size, check for thin parts, and run the slicer's repair if it reports errors. PrintMesh does not guarantee a watertight mesh and does not slice the file for you.
Can I convert a PNG to STL for free?
New accounts get 10 free credits every month. A Standard generation costs 1 credit, so you can try several PNGs. Free downloads are watermarked; paid plans remove the watermark.
